Important news about Mobile Device Management systems
2024. Truecaller launches a web client for its Android users
In a move that would likely be met with a mixture of mild curiosity and inevitable confusion, Truecaller has decided to grace us with a web version of its caller ID app. This new marvel, charmingly titled Truecaller for Web, allows you to sync your SMS, chat and call notifications, while casually peeking at numbers from the comfort of your desktop. At the moment, only the Android species of human can partake, though the iOS tribe is promised an invitation later. Android users can connect via the ancient ritual of scanning a QR code, but don’t get too comfortable—the system, in its infinite wisdom, limits you to one web session and ceremoniously logs out any forgotten users after 30 days. You can, of course, manually banish a browser from your Truecaller domain, much like you would on other web-bound realms such as WhatsApp or Telegram, ensuring you maintain control over your digital empire.
2024. Apple brings enterprise device management to the Vision Pro
Apple's decision to fold Vision Pro neatly into the Apple Device management process is likely to make IT professionals giddy with something bordering on joy, or at least mild enthusiasm. It means they can now shuffle Vision Pro devices around with the same level of cool, detached efficiency they already bring to iPhones, iPads, watches and Macs, making activation as smooth as an interstellar hitchhike during onboarding or device swapping. While augmented and virtual reality have dabbled in industries like manufacturing, design and field service—Apple, ever the visionary (pun intended)—now sees real-time guided work scenarios as Vision Pro’s shining moment, especially for training or, say, not screwing up complex tasks. And if that weren’t enough to make your average knowledge worker positively swoon, Vision Pro offers an infinite desktop for all the usual apps, leaving plenty of room for procrastination or, one assumes, actual work. IT teams, naturally, get to keep their beloved toolkit of single sign-on, identity management and security features—because even in virtual reality, someone has to keep the chaos in check.
2022. Mosyle rides its device management software to the bank, raising $196M
Imagine, if you will, the curious entity that is Mosyle, a company merrily devoted to keeping Apple devices in line (or, more precisely, in compliance). In a move that could be described as both heroic and slightly baffling, Mosyle has hoisted a rather formidable $196 million from investors, presumably while winking conspiratorially at Apple. This windfall appears just as Mosyle reveals its grand new invention, the Apple Unified Platform for Business—likely something that makes IT administrators emit squeals of delight as they corral unruly tablets, laptops, and smartphones into something resembling harmony. Known in less poetic circles as Mobile Device Management, or MDM, this technology grants IT admins the omniscient power to oversee devices that roam perilously close to precious corporate data. Businesses are apparently quite fond of this setup, especially now that employees insist on using their own devices to access the company’s secrets. Apple, in its sage wisdom, has added MDM capabilities over the years, beckoning enterprise clients into its ecosystem. But as Araujo, Mosyle’s chief philosopher of security, points out, the path of MDM on Apple devices is not without perils—a route fraught with enough security and privacy challenges to keep the most stoic IT admin up at night, sighing deeply into their tea.
2022. Fleet nabs $20M to enable enterprises to manage their devices
Fleet, a startup providing a service to monitor and manage enterprise devices like laptops, has secured $20 million in a Series A round. Managing employee devices was already challenging for IT teams, but the pandemic intensified the difficulty. Fleet seeks to tackle common issues with a “visibility platform” that oversees not only laptops but also computing infrastructure, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices and servers. The company’s product serves as a reliable source for device data, enabling teams to monitor the health of a laptop battery, for example, or detect if a file was unexpectedly modified on a production server.
2021. Apple introduces device management solution aimed at small business
For many small businesses, attempting to manage their employees’ Apple devices and keep them current is a significant challenge. These companies typically lack advanced IT departments and when devices malfunction or users have inquiries, they are often left to resolve issues on their own using Apple’s consumer support tools. Today, the company introduced the beta version of a device management solution called Apple Business Essentials specifically targeted at businesses with fewer than 500 employees. It is designed to oversee Apple devices throughout the device's lifecycle and consists of three main components: device management, storage and support, all bundled into a single subscription.
2021. Jamf snags zero trust security startup Wandera for $400M
Jamf, the enterprise Apple device management firm, announced it is acquiring Wandera, a zero trust security startup, for $400 million. Offering a range of management services for Apple devices, Jamf serves IT departments in large organizations. It is the market leader and acquiring Wandera adds a crucial modern security layer to the platform. The integration of Wandera and Jamf will provide customers with a unified platform that manages deployment, application lifecycle management, policies, filtering and security features across all Apple devices, while delivering zero trust network access for all mobile workers.
2020. Ivanti has acquired MDM provider MobileIron
Ivanti, a plucky and intrepid IT security software company, has cheerfully wrapped up the rather monumental task of acquiring MobileIron, an enterprise mobile security outfit, for a cool $872 million — which, to put it lightly, is not the sort of loose change you find down the back of a sofa. MobileIron, as it happens, was cunningly engineered to keep a watchful, eagle-eyed gaze over the labyrinth of corporate information, especially as workers merrily fiddle with mobile devices and dip into the great, swirling ether of cloud data. Founded in 2007 by Ajay Mishra and Suresh Batchu, a duo presumably wise in the ways of technological wizardry, MobileIron was responsible for unleashing the very first mobile-centric, zero trust platform upon an unsuspecting industry, all based on a marvelously unified endpoint management (UEM) approach. This brilliantly paranoid method of zero trust from MobileIron made absolutely sure that only the most properly authorized users, devices, apps, and services got anywhere near precious business assets. And for those who care about such things, MobileIron took its first bow on the stock exchange in 2014, where it was assigned the delightfully concise ticker symbol MOBL.
2020. Kandji gets $21M for its Apple device management platform
Kandji, a mobile device management (MDM) startup, has secured $21 million in a Series A funding round. Kandji is developing an advanced zero-touch device management solution to assist larger organizations in overseeing their fleet of Apple devices, ensuring adherence to specific sets of regulations. Kandji’s device management simplifies the most frequent and intricate tasks for Apple IT administrators, enabling distributed teams to get started quickly and securely. It offers nearly 200 one-click policy frameworks, allowing an organization to browse by compliance framework or utilize pre-built templates if there is no specific compliance requirement.
2020. Microsoft updates its Endpoint Manager with improved macOS support
Microsoft has added several new features to Microsoft Endpoint Manager, the company’s unified platform for managing and securing devices in a corporate setting. The service, which merges the capabilities of Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager with the cloud-based tools of Intune, was launched just under a year ago. Today’s updates build on the foundation established at that time and enhance macOS and iPad support, as well as introduce new tools for linking mobile devices to on-premises applications and additional productivity tools based on the data the company collects from the service. The company is also simplifying the process for corporate IT departments to provision devices for employees remotely.
2020. Codeproof offers free MDM for healthcare organizations in response to COVID-19
The spread of the coronavirus has had major economic impact and large numbers of severely ill patients are placing immense pressure on the healthcare industry. Codeproof is offering a solution to support them during these difficult times. Healthcare organizations can get the Codeproof platform free for 6-months. Using the Codeproof MDM platform, healthcare providers can securely access the business apps and data and sensitive medical information required to do their jobs efficiently within regulatory bounds at scale.
