Weebly
Building a website on Weebly is unlike any other alternative website builder. Our drag & drop website builder makes it dead simple to create a powerful, professional website without any technical skills required. Over 6 million people and small businesses have joined Weebly to build their online presence. Content elements (like text, photos, maps, and videos) are added to your website by simply dragging & dropping them into place. Text is edited just like in a word processor. Building your website is done in real time, right from within your web browser.

Weebly and Wix are both website builders, which means they exist to help people create websites without actually knowing how to create websites. This is an excellent idea, much like selling self-inflating life rafts to people who don't know how to swim. Both offer free plans (because everyone loves free things, even if they come with a side order of advertising), e-commerce functionality (because selling things online is the modern equivalent of setting up a market stall in space) and SEO tools (which, much like the infinite improbability drive, promise to get you noticed in an otherwise uncaring universe). They also allow third-party integrations, which means if something important is missing, you can bolt it on later and pretend it was always meant to be there.

Weebly, having started its life in the United States in 2006 before being adopted by Square in 2018, is the more restrained and well-behaved of the two. It prefers things neat, tidy and structured, much like an intergalactic bureaucracy. This makes it wonderfully simple for beginners and small businesses who just want a website that works without causing an existential crisis. However, if you have aspirations of grand design, Weebly might begin to feel like a very polite but firm hotel receptionist who tells you that no, you absolutely cannot move the furniture and no, there is no secret passageway behind the bookshelf.

Wix, meanwhile, also born in 2006 but hailing from Israel, is the kind of website builder that doesn’t believe in the word "impossible." It allows you to drag, drop, twist and explode elements across the screen with reckless abandon, making it ideal for designers, creatives and people who enjoy pushing buttons just to see what happens. It has more design options, more third-party integrations and more overall enthusiasm for being more. Of course, this means that if you're the type of person who prefers clear instructions and a straightforward path, Wix might feel like being handed the controls of a spaceship with no manual—exciting, yes, but also slightly terrifying.
