Webs and Weebly are two eerily similar entities, both existing to help humans build websites without the existential dread of learning to code. They come with drag-and-drop interfaces, offer free and premium plans (because, of course, money must be involved) and even let users create online stores to sell things they probably don’t need. Their templates are customizable, their designs are mobile-friendly and at some point, both were swallowed up by larger, more corporate-sounding companies—because that’s just how the universe works.
Webs, which came into existence in the ancient year of 2001 (when the internet was mostly held together with string and optimism), catered largely to small businesses and individuals who wanted a website but weren’t entirely sure why. It had a built-in membership system for those who felt the need to create their own miniature, exclusive societies. However, Webs was never quite as versatile when it came to third-party integrations, and, after two decades of quietly existing, it was mercifully put out of its misery by Vistaprint in 2021.
Weebly, a younger and somewhat more ambitious cousin, arrived in 2006, ready to take on the world with a focus on entrepreneurs and e-commerce. It was eventually scooped up by Square in 2018, which meant it suddenly found itself laden with more business tools than it knew what to do with. Weebly offered better blogging features, more advanced SEO customization, and, most importantly, continued to exist, unlike its fallen comrade. It remains a solid choice for anyone who wants to build an online empire or, at the very least, a site about their cat.
