Ah, Vonage and Zoom Phone. Two odd, yet surprisingly useful services that allow you to make calls over the internet, like an intergalactic communication device, only without the complicated buttons. Both come with apps that let you call people whether you’re on your desktop, mobile or perhaps a slightly confused toaster. They’ve also got all the usual gizmos: voicemail, call forwarding and blocking those annoying calls that insist on offering you lower interest rates, no matter how many times you hang up. They also let you play nicely with other software, like CRM systems, so long as you're the kind of person who enjoys connecting everything to everything else.

Now, Vonage, bless its heart, has been around since 2001, hailing from the United States of America—where it’s been helping small businesses and even your grandma get better phone service. It’s especially fond of Salesforce, because who doesn’t love a good CRM? With Vonage, you can call all over the globe and customise your plans to match whatever bizarre business you’ve set up. It’s a little like having a well-organized toolbox for communication, minus the metal clang.

And then there's Zoom Phone, which burst onto the scene in 2019, waving a friendly flag for big businesses who love everything Zoom. It’s deeply integrated with Zoom’s video conferencing system, so if you’re already attending meetings on there, you can now call someone from the same place and pretend to be a true tech wizard. More advanced than Vonage, Zoom Phone’s AI-driven tools are the sort of thing that make you feel like you’re one step closer to having a personal assistant who knows all your secrets. It’s ideal if you’re managing an empire or at least a moderately sized office.
