Skype
Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Skype alternative for enterprise is called Skype for Business.

mytello
With mytello you can make cheap international calls. Our service works from any landline or cell phone.

Skype and mytello are both cunningly devised means of making international calls without having to sell a kidney. They exist in the strange and mystical realm of the internet, where voices are turned into little packets of data and flung across the globe at the speed of light (or at least the speed of your internet connection, which in some places is roughly that of a particularly lazy carrier pigeon). Both require an account, both will happily take your money and both promise to connect you to distant loved ones or business associates with only the occasional existential buffering crisis.

Skype, born in 2003 in the unlikely tech hub of Estonia, was originally designed to let people talk across vast distances without involving an army of telephone operators or, indeed, a telephone. It soon evolved into an all-consuming Microsoft-owned behemoth, capable of video calls, messaging and generally being shoehorned into corporate meetings whether people like it or not. It’s perfect for remote workers, businesses and anyone who wants to experience the exquisite joy of repeating "Can you hear me?" into the void.

Mytello, on the other hand, appeared in 2016 in Austria with a simpler and far less chatty ambition: cheap international phone calls, nothing more, nothing less. No video, no messaging, no bloated software updates that demand half your hard drive—just dial a local access number and off you go. It’s designed for travelers, expats and anyone who prefers their calls unencumbered by unnecessary features or the looming presence of Microsoft. Whether this is progress or regression depends entirely on how much you enjoy watching your own pixelated face during a call.
