There exist, in the vast and bewildering cosmos of point-of-sale systems, two entities both called ShopKeep, which is rather like discovering two entirely separate planets both named Jeff. Both of these ShopKeeps claim to be indispensable to small and medium-sized businesses, promising to track sales, manage inventory and generally keep shop owners from descending into madness. They also enjoy living in the cloud, possibly sipping on digital tea while integrating with various payment processors and keeping an eye on customer loyalty, which, as everyone knows, is a fleeting and mysterious phenomenon.

The first ShopKeep emerged in 2008 in the United States, much like a particularly ambitious toaster deciding it would quite like to handle financial transactions. It was built primarily for iPads, later deigning to expand its horizons and was eventually absorbed into Lightspeed in 2020, where it presumably found itself among other lost and wandering software. It catered to the sort of businesses that smell of freshly ground coffee or artisanal soap, carefully avoiding anything too large, too corporate or too self-aware.

The second ShopKeep, meanwhile, hails from an entirely different part of the world, having cropped up in a different year with slightly different ideas about what a POS system should be. It is specifically attuned to the local regulatory quirks of its homeland, which likely means it understands a terrifying amount about tax codes and receipt formats. It also comes with its own distinct pricing model, which, as with all such things, is probably comprehensible only to advanced mathematicians and the occasional goat.
