Twilio
Twilio powers personalized interactions and trusted global communications to connect you with customers.

SendGrid and Twilio are both excellent examples of modern technology attempting to make communication easier while simultaneously making it far more complicated. Both exist in the nebulous realm of cloud-based messaging services, where emails, texts and automated alerts fly around at speeds slightly slower than light but significantly faster than a disgruntled carrier pigeon. They integrate with various platforms, offer pay-as-you-go pricing, and, in a fit of corporate inevitability, both ended up under the same Twilio-shaped umbrella, much like two long-lost cousins discovering they’ve inherited the same slightly haunted mansion.

SendGrid, founded in 2009 (which was an excellent year for both technology and bad movie sequels), is all about emails—transactional ones, marketing ones and ones that attempt to bypass spam filters with the grace of a gazelle on roller skates. It’s the tool of choice for businesses needing to send millions of emails without their servers catching fire. It comes with delightful features like dedicated IPs and reputation management, ensuring that your email campaigns don’t end up exiled to the junk folder, never to be read by anyone except an overenthusiastic spam bot.

Twilio, meanwhile, took its first digital breath in 2008, a year before SendGrid and decided that while emails were lovely, the real fun was in SMS, voice and video. It enables developers to add messaging and calling features to apps, because nothing says “progress” like an AI customer service voice mispronouncing your name. It also handles phone number verification, two-factor authentication and other things that make life both safer and marginally more annoying. Unlike SendGrid, Twilio doesn’t particularly care if your emails are ignored, because it's far too busy ensuring that you receive at least three automated appointment reminders and one deeply suspicious text about an overdue warranty.
