Time tracking is one of those things that sounds like a good idea until you realize that tracking time takes time and suddenly you’re stuck in a paradox that would make even the most seasoned time traveler queasy. RescueTime and Toggl both claim to solve this by making sure you know exactly where your minutes go before they scurry off into the abyss of lost productivity. They integrate with other software, work across devices and generate reports that may or may not confirm your sneaking suspicion that you spend more time looking at cat memes than actually working. Both cater to teams and individuals, presumably in a valiant attempt to make us all slightly less chaotic.

RescueTime, which popped into existence in the United States in 2008, has a rather sneaky approach—it watches what you do without needing your constant input, which is either a dream come true or a surveillance nightmare, depending on your perspective. It’s designed for knowledge workers and people who like the idea of productivity but prefer not to micromanage every second. It even blocks distractions, as if standing between you and yet another Wikipedia deep dive on the history of spoons. But if you want fine-tuned control over your logs, you’re out of luck—RescueTime has decided you’re better off being passively observed.

Toggl, however, comes from Estonia (launched in 2006, back when time itself was younger) and demands a more hands-on approach. You start and stop timers manually, categorize tasks and generally act like a responsible adult in charge of their own schedule. It’s a favorite of freelancers, teams and businesses, mostly because it has billing features and project management tools, meaning you can at least pretend to be organized. It also works offline, presumably for those brave souls who venture into the wilderness and still feel the need to account for every passing second.
