Skype
Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Skype alternative for enterprise is called Skype for Business.

Rebtel and Skype, in a cosmic sort of way, are remarkably similar. Both allow you to make phone calls across vast and mysterious distances without needing to shout, which is quite handy. They have apps that fit snugly into your pocket, like a tiny, slightly smug personal assistant who insists on connecting you to people whether you like it or not. And naturally, they both let you send messages because sometimes words are cheaper than minutes and everyone enjoys the occasional “Are you there?” followed by an impatient “Hello??”

Rebtel, however, does something particularly sneaky—it doesn’t always need the internet. It uses local phone lines to route your call as if it were smuggling your voice across international borders disguised as a perfectly normal local conversation. This makes it fantastically useful for immigrants, expats and those who refuse to be confined by geography but still want to talk to their grandmother. Born in Sweden in 2006, Rebtel exists to defy the tyranny of roaming fees, although it remains stubbornly uninterested in video calls, which it considers a frivolous extravagance.

Skype, on the other hand, is the classic old wizard of internet calling, hailing originally from Estonia in 2003 before Microsoft adopted it and gave it a proper desk job. It thrives in the world of Wi-Fi, VoIP and office meetings that could have been an email. Unlike Rebtel, Skype enjoys parading its video-calling prowess and screen-sharing trickery, making it an invaluable tool for businesses, families and that one friend who insists on turning every conversation into an impromptu TED Talk. Also, it now sits cozily inside Microsoft’s digital empire, rubbing shoulders with Outlook and Teams, dreaming of a day when it might once again be the undisputed king of online calls.
