QuickBooks and Square are, at first glance, two perfectly reasonable pieces of software designed to make life easier for people who would rather be doing literally anything else. They both let you process payments, send invoices and generate financial reports that make you feel either very responsible or mildly nauseous, depending on the numbers involved. They also come with mobile apps so you can stress about your finances from anywhere, whether that’s the office, the beach or somewhere in between where the Wi-Fi is just unreliable enough to make you rethink your choices.

QuickBooks has been around since 1983, which is roughly the same time dinosaurs last roamed the Earth, if you ask anyone under 30. It is, at its core, an accounting software, meaning it exists primarily to help business owners sleep better at night or at least have something specific to blame when they don’t. It’s good at bookkeeping, tax calculations and other things that sound important but make your head hurt if you think about them for too long. It is best suited for businesses that enjoy reconciling transactions almost as much as they enjoy making them.

Square, by contrast, was born in 2009, which makes it practically a teenager—full of enthusiasm, sleek interfaces and an overwhelming desire to sell you a little white card reader. It is far more interested in point-of-sale transactions, making it a favorite among café owners, street vendors and anyone who’s ever had to nod politely while someone fumbles with a chip reader. Unlike QuickBooks, it doesn’t particularly care how you organize your books as long as you’re swiping, tapping and generally making money.
