PayPal
PayPal is an international e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. Online money transfers serve as electronic alternatives to paying with traditional paper methods, such as cheques and money orders. PayPal is the faster, safer way to send money, make an online payment, receive money or set up a merchant account.

Skrill
Skrill (formerly Moneybookers) is a global e-commerce business that allows payments to be made through the Internet. Our worldwide payment network lets businesses extend their reach globally with over 100 local payment options. We already meet the needs of over 156,000 businesses with everything from a simple one-step integration to a fully-tailored payment solution.

PayPal and Skrill are two remarkably similar entities in the grand and occasionally infuriating world of online payments. Both allow you to send money to people you’ve never met, in currencies you don’t fully understand and with fees that always seem slightly higher than you remember. They provide plastic cards that let you spend your digital wealth in real-world shops, because apparently, society still insists on physical existence. Security? Oh, absolutely—layers of encryption, two-factor authentication and the occasional "please verify your identity by identifying which of these blurry pictures contains a traffic light."

PayPal, the elder of the two, was born in 1998 in the United States, which means it has had longer to accumulate both users and confusing policies. It thrives in the bustling ecosystem of online shopping, particularly on eBay, which once owned it but now treats it like an ex they’re still awkwardly friends with. It charges handsomely for the privilege of sending money across borders and offers a buyer protection system that’s either a godsend or a bureaucratic black hole, depending on which side of a dispute you find yourself on. It also integrates seamlessly with various e-commerce platforms, so businesses can extract money from you with minimal effort.

Skrill, arriving fashionably late in 2001 and hailing from the UK, decided to specialize in slightly more adventurous financial pursuits, like online gambling and cryptocurrency trading. It boasts lower international transfer fees, a VIP program for those who enjoy feeling important and a somewhat lesser-known status outside gaming circles. Skrill users can dabble in crypto without needing to understand how it works—much like how most people use Wi-Fi. While it’s not as widely accepted in mainstream shopping, it remains a favorite in industries where risk is not so much a concern as a lifestyle choice.
