Nagios and Zabbix are both splendidly complicated pieces of software designed to keep an eye on your computers, networks and just about anything else that beeps, blinks or crashes at the worst possible moment. They both sit quietly in the background, pretending to be your IT department’s best friend, all while secretly waiting for something to go horribly wrong so they can gleefully send out alerts that nobody reads. They come with web dashboards, plugins and the general ability to make you feel like you’re in control—until you’re not.
Nagios, a seasoned veteran from the USA (circa 1999, a time when dial-up still roamed the earth), takes a proudly no-nonsense, text-file-heavy, plugin-centric approach. It assumes you already know exactly what you're doing or at least that you enjoy pretending you do. It’s fantastic for enterprises, particularly those that enjoy configuring things by hand and have a penchant for complexity. If you want graphs or fancy reports, well, that's a job for external tools—Nagios is far too dignified to bother with such frivolities.
Zabbix, on the other hand, hails from Latvia (est. 2001, a slightly more modern era where people had started suspecting that the internet might be useful). It comes with built-in templates, databases and a more “we’ll take care of that for you” approach, making it friendlier for organizations that prefer not to spend their weekends deciphering configuration files. Unlike its older cousin, Zabbix happily includes historical data analysis and a user-friendly setup because it suspects, quite rightly, that most IT professionals would rather spend their time drinking coffee than manually tweaking monitoring scripts.
