Monster and ZipRecruiter are both job platforms, which is a rather fancy way of saying they help humans find other humans to do things they don’t particularly want to do themselves. Both use artificial intelligence, which is a bit like a very clever and slightly overenthusiastic butler who insists on suggesting candidates whether you’ve asked for them or not. Employers post jobs, candidates apply and somewhere in the middle, an algorithm hums quietly while making important life decisions for people who aren’t aware of it.

Monster, being around since 1999, is a bit like an ancient wizard who has seen it all and insists that things were much harder back in the day when you had to fax résumés uphill, both ways. It’s a global affair, offering job listings in multiple languages and takes itself quite seriously with salary comparison tools and career advice, as if whispering to job seekers, “Are you really sure you want to do this?” Large companies love Monster, mainly because it requires them to sign up for a subscription, which is the corporate equivalent of committing to a long-term relationship with a website.

ZipRecruiter, on the other hand, is the younger, more excitable sibling, arriving in 2010 with the idea that hiring should be quick, painless and preferably automated to the point where humans barely need to be involved. Instead of making companies sift through endless résumés, it sends job postings scattering across the internet like a particularly determined flock of pigeons. It thrives on AI-driven matching, loves small businesses and prefers a pay-per-post system—because nothing says modern employment like renting job visibility by the day.
