Microsoft Teams and ON24 are both excellent at making people stare at their screens for extended periods, nodding sagely while secretly browsing something entirely unrelated. They both offer video conferencing, screen sharing and analytics, which means they can track precisely how long someone pretends to be engaged. Integrations with CRM and marketing tools ensure that, at least in theory, the right people are talking to the right other people, though no one is entirely sure if that’s ever truly the case.

Microsoft Teams was born in 2017, forged deep within the labyrinthine halls of Microsoft (which, if you listen closely, hums softly with the sound of endless updates). It is primarily used for workplace collaboration, ensuring that messages can be lost in a flood of notifications faster than you can say "synergy." With chat, file sharing and an insistence on organizing everything into teams and channels, it serves businesses, educators and governments, all of whom are desperately trying to keep up with its latest feature changes.

ON24, on the other hand, has been around since 1998, which means it remembers a time when "going online" required making a cup of tea while the modem screamed at you. It is a creation of ON24, Inc., designed for marketers and event organizers who want to captivate audiences in virtual events, though it mostly ensures that people have more tabs open than they can possibly manage. Featuring interactive elements like polls, Q&A and engagement tracking, it provides the illusion of audience participation, even as half of them have wandered off to check their emails.
