LinkedIn and SimplyHired, it turns out, are remarkably similar in that they both exist to help you find a job. Both offer job listings, allow you to create a profile of sorts and offer tailored job recommendations based on your mystical browsing behavior. The curious part is that both let employers post jobs and both will keep reminding you of your existence, even when you’re not looking for a job. It's as though these platforms have become the digital equivalent of someone asking, "Are you sure you don’t want to work here?" every time you go online.

Now, LinkedIn is far more than just a job-search tool. It's a vast, professional network where you can endlessly connect with people you've never met, endorse their skills and join groups that discuss things like "10 Ways to Optimize Your Career" and "How to Talk About Yourself Without Sounding Like a Robot." Launched in 2003 and originating from the United States, LinkedIn has transformed from a simple job board into a digital cocktail party of professionals. And if you pay, you get even more features like the ability to message people who ignore your connection requests.

SimplyHired, on the other hand, is much simpler — it’s all about job listings and search, without the fanfare of networking or constant self-promotion. Founded in 2005, also in the United States, SimplyHired quietly pulls job listings from around the internet and presents them with a minimum of fuss. There are no endorsements or professional groups, just a straightforward, utilitarian approach to finding work, and, if you're lucky, a salary estimator to help you gauge if the paycheck will allow you to live or simply exist.
