In the grand and bewildering realm of point-of-sale systems, where cash registers have evolved into sleek, cloud-dwelling intelligences, Lightspeed and Revel stand as two particularly determined contenders. Both exist to help businesses keep track of sales, employees and inventory without resorting to notebooks, guesswork or the vague hope that money just sorts itself out. They can handle multiple locations at once, integrate with e-commerce platforms and generally do everything short of making a nice cup of tea—though one suspects they are working on that, too.
Lightspeed, having emerged from Canada in 2005, began life catering to retail businesses before deciding that restaurants also deserved its attention. It also comes equipped with an offline mode, meaning that even when the internet decides to take a spontaneous and inconvenient vacation, transactions can still happen and chaos can be kept at a respectable minimum.
