Lever and SmartRecruiters are both highly sophisticated pieces of hiring technology, which is to say, they exist to make recruiting slightly less of a headache while ensuring everyone involved still ends up mildly frustrated. Both sit in the cloud, which is a wonderfully vague place where important things apparently happen. They automate, they integrate, they analyze and they allow entire teams to hover over a single candidate’s profile like a flock of indecisive pigeons.

Lever, which emerged in 2012 from the depths of the United States, has a fondness for relationships. Not in a romantic way, but in the sense that it treats recruitment like an ongoing conversation rather than a one-time event. It’s particularly good at reminding you that you once emailed a candidate in 2018 and that, statistically speaking, they might still be interested. It also cozies up with LinkedIn to help companies source talent who aren’t actively looking for jobs but might be if only someone sent them a well-crafted, non-creepy message.

SmartRecruiters, on the other hand, hails from France (because of course a hiring platform could have European flair) and has been around since 2010, making it the slightly older and more experienced sibling. It wants to be more than an ATS—it wants to be the full talent acquisition suite, the Swiss Army knife of hiring. It optimizes job ads with AI, customizes workflows to within an inch of their lives and handles high-volume hiring without breaking a sweat. Essentially, if Lever is about nurturing relationships, SmartRecruiters is about making sure you hire 500 people before lunch without losing your sanity.
