SharePoint
SharePoint's multi-purpose platform allows for managing and provisioning of intranet portals, extranets and websites, document management and file management, collaboration spaces, social networking tools, enterprise search, business intelligence tooling, process/information integration, and third-party developed solutions. SharePoint can also be used as a web application development platform.
Joomla and SharePoint are, at first glance, two entirely different things, much like a toaster and a spaceship. Yet, in their own peculiar way, they both do the same thing: manage content and allow people to collaborate. Both let users have different levels of access, so Steve from Accounting doesn’t accidentally delete the CEO’s quarterly report. They are extensible, meaning that if you suddenly need your CMS to also make coffee, someone out there has probably tried coding a plugin for it. And yes, they both exist on the web, which means they both occasionally crash when you need them most.

Joomla, born in 2005 in Australia, is the scrappy open-source hero, designed mainly for websites, blogs and digital communities. It thrives in the chaotic world of PHP and MySQL, where eager webmasters tweak and modify until they forget what the original template looked like. It can handle document management, but only if you’re willing to wrestle it into submission with third-party extensions. It’s happiest when powering sleek, public-facing websites where people come to read, click and occasionally leave snarky comments.

SharePoint, on the other hand, emerged from the depths of Microsoft in 2001, probably as a result of an existential crisis about where all the corporate documents should go. It is, above all else, a bastion of enterprise collaboration, designed for intranets, serious business things and ensuring no file is ever truly lost (just buried under a million nested folders). It integrates seamlessly with Microsoft 365, meaning if you blink at it wrong, it might open Excel. It runs on Windows Server and SQL databases, which means IT departments both love and fear it in equal measure.
