Jimdo and Wix are, at first glance, rather similar creatures. Both allow you to build a website without any knowledge of quantum physics, HTML or the secret handshake of web developers. They come with free plans, paid plans and plans that make you wonder if you should have planned anything at all. With a few clicks, you can have an online store, a blog or a digital shrine to your cat. They even wield AI-powered website builders, which are quite handy, unless they start developing opinions about your design choices.

Jimdo, born in 2007 in Germany, takes a rather pragmatic approach to website building. It’s particularly fond of small businesses and freelancers, gently guiding them towards GDPR compliance, because the EU loves a bit of paperwork. It prefers a mobile-first philosophy, ensuring your site looks decent even when viewed on a device so small you might mistake it for a biscuit. The trade-off, of course, is that it offers fewer design options—perfect if you fear an excess of creativity.

Wix, on the other hand, is the slightly older, more excitable cousin, emerging from Israel in 2006 with an explosion of templates and widgets. It aims to be everything for everyone—small businesses, artists and anyone who fancies an animated background for no good reason. It has an app marketplace that allows you to bolt on extra features like a DIY spaceship, but beware: with great power comes great procrastination. Also, unlike Jimdo, Wix seems to assume that the more design freedom you have, the happier you’ll be—though history suggests this is how madness begins.
