Greenhouse and Oracle Taleo are both applicant tracking systems, which means they spend most of their time pretending to make hiring easier while secretly adding more dashboards than anyone asked for. They schedule interviews, generate reports and integrate with all sorts of HR tools that recruiters claim to love but rarely use properly. Both products have grand ambitions of making hiring faster, fairer and more data-driven, which in the corporate world is roughly equivalent to trying to herd cats while compiling a spreadsheet about cat-herding efficiency.
Greenhouse, an enthusiastic upstart from 2012, was designed with fast-growing startups in mind—because nothing screams “we have no hiring process” like a startup. Taleo, on the other hand, has been around since 1996, which in software terms is practically the Jurassic period. Originally from Canada before being assimilated into Oracle’s vast and complex empire, it was built for large enterprises, meaning it takes months to set up, years to master and an eternity to fully understand. It integrates deeply with Oracle’s other software, which is fantastic if you already live in the Oracle ecosystem and slightly terrifying if you don’t. It also takes compliance and security very seriously, which is excellent news for governments and banks, but slightly less thrilling for the poor souls navigating its labyrinthine interface.
