GoToMeeting and WebEx, at first glance, appear to be essentially the same thing: tools designed to let people sit in their pajamas while pretending to be in an important business meeting. Both let you share your screen, record your conversations for posterity (or legal cover) and integrate with all the usual workplace software designed to ensure you never truly escape work. They also promise security, encryption and various features that sound reassuringly important but mostly exist to make IT departments feel powerful.

GoToMeeting, the scrappy American upstart from 2004, focuses on small and mid-sized businesses that just want to get on a call without launching a space mission. It offers a friendly interface, AI-generated meeting notes (so you can pretend to have been paying attention) and a quick setup that doesn’t require a degree in advanced networking. What it lacks, however, is the ability to host massive webinars, meaning that if your plan is to address an entire planet, you may want to look elsewhere.

WebEx, by contrast, was born in 1995, later absorbed into the Cisco empire and now operates on the assumption that every meeting could, at any moment, escalate into an intergalactic diplomatic summit. It boasts enterprise-level security, AI-powered noise cancellation for when someone forgets to mute their barking dog and real-time translation because, let’s face it, no one ever understands what anyone else is saying anyway. It also plays particularly well with Cisco’s vast ecosystem of networking hardware, ensuring that IT administrators remain the true overlords of modern communication.
