WordPress is web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. We like to say that WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time. The core software is built by hundreds of community volunteers, and when you’re ready for more there are thousands of plugins and themes available to transform your site into almost anything you can imagine.
GoDaddy and WordPress, despite sounding like the names of two eccentric space travelers, actually have quite a bit in common. They both let you create websites without having to engage in arcane coding rituals, they both offer hosting services so your carefully crafted words don’t just vanish into the void and they both like to pretend eCommerce is something you can do without losing your sanity. They even have customer support teams who, in theory, will rescue you when your website mysteriously collapses into a digital black hole.

GoDaddy, which sprang into existence in 1997 in the USA, started life as a domain registrar, which is a fancy way of saying "that place where people buy website names they’ll regret later." Over time, it evolved into an all-in-one package designed for small businesses and anyone who’d rather build a website by clicking on colorful buttons than by summoning the spirits of long-forgotten programmers. Its website builder is simple, effective and about as flexible as a teaspoon, but at least it gets the job done without requiring a degree in computer sorcery.

WordPress, on the other hand, was born in 2003 in the UK, presumably over a nice cup of tea and quickly became the go-to choice for bloggers, developers and anyone with a suspiciously specific need for absolute control over every pixel on their site. It comes in two flavors: one where they host it for you and one where you must host it yourself, which is a bit like choosing between renting an apartment or building a house out of HTML and caffeine. The upside? A vast universe of plugins and themes that let you turn your website into anything from a minimalist blog to a fully operational intergalactic trading post—assuming you can find the right combination of features before you lose your mind.
