booksy
Booksy for Customers is a FREE booking system for people looking to schedule appointments for health & beauty services. Customers can download the app (available for Android & iOS) or visit marketplace booksy.com to find local services.

Genbook and Booksy are both rather clever bits of software designed to help people who are very good at things like cutting hair or massaging backs but rather terrible at remembering when they agreed to do so. They both send out reminders, handle payments and make customers feel delightfully in control of their own time—until, of course, they realize they’ve double-booked themselves because their optimism far exceeds the number of hours in a day. Both have apps, both let customers leave reviews and both exist primarily to prevent the kind of scheduling disasters that lead to angry phone calls and existential crises.

Genbook, the elder statesman of the two, has been around since 2006, which in software years is practically prehistoric. It hails from the United States, presumably created by someone who had once missed an appointment and vowed never to let it happen again. It’s particularly good for solo entrepreneurs and small businesses, the kind of people who don’t need a vast empire of scheduling but just want to make sure Mrs. Thompson shows up for her acupuncture appointment at the correct time. It even lets businesses hide reviews if they find them too existentially distressing, which is a mercy in an era where one-star ratings can be given for reasons as profound as "the receptionist didn't smile enough."

Booksy, on the other hand, is the newer, flashier contender, born in Poland in 2014 and determined to take over the world one appointment at a time. It’s not just for small businesses but for larger operations, people who have so many customers they need algorithms to herd them like particularly unruly sheep. Unlike Genbook, it doubles as a marketplace, meaning clients can browse and book services they didn’t even know they needed, leading to entire afternoons lost in a spiral of existential self-improvement. It also has a lot more marketing bells and whistles, perfect for businesses that feel their social media presence is one well-placed promotion away from greatness—or, at the very least, solvency.
