FinancialForce and Salesforce have quite a lot in common, which is exactly what makes them so different. Both exist in the nebulous, ever-expanding realm of cloud-based business software, a place where everything is connected, yet nothing is ever quite where you left it. They share a deep, almost symbiotic relationship, as FinancialForce is built right on top of Salesforce, much like a particularly ambitious barnacle attaching itself to a rather successful whale. They both promise dazzling AI-driven insights, automate things you never realized needed automating, and—being born in the USA—have an unshakable confidence that they can organize businesses better than businesses can organize themselves.
FinancialForce, for its part, is the younger of the two, appearing in 2009 with an earnest desire to make finances, billing and professional services run smoother—because nothing says "cutting-edge" like accounting. It caters to companies that like their spreadsheets automated and their revenue streams predictable, which is to say, all of them. Unlike Salesforce, which is happy to roam the software savannah as an independent predator, FinancialForce exists entirely within the Salesforce ecosystem, sort of like a highly specialized parasite but, you know, in a good way.
Salesforce, on the other hand, has been strutting around since 1999, proudly proclaiming itself as the undisputed champion of Customer Relationship Management, which is a fancy way of saying, "We’ll help you sell more stuff to more people more often." It attracts businesses of all shapes and sizes, offering tools for sales, marketing and customer service and has an app marketplace so vast that it might just be where missing socks end up. Unlike FinancialForce, Salesforce is perfectly comfortable standing on its own, integrating with an absurd number of other systems and generally behaving like the cool older sibling that figured things out first but still lets the younger one tag along.
