Joomla
Joomla is a free and open source content management system (CMS) for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets and a model–view–controller (MVC) Web application framework that can also be used independently.
ExpressionEngine and Joomla are both nifty bits of technology designed to help you put content on the web, which is generally a good thing if you're trying to avoid writing endless HTML by hand. Both come as open-source, meaning you can tweak them until they do exactly what you want—if, of course, you’re the sort who enjoys tinkering with code. They also share a few other things: languages, forums and extensions, which seem to crop up in most web-related systems, presumably by some universal law of digital nature.

But here’s where it gets interesting. ExpressionEngine, created by a team in the USA back in 2004, is the kind of CMS you hand to someone who enjoys a challenge—or perhaps someone who can’t resist the allure of customizability. It’s built for the sort of grand web designs that make you think, "Ah, yes, this site will require an unreasonable amount of coding and caffeine." You’ll find it easy to scale up, which is handy if you’re planning on taking over the digital universe or at least hosting a giant online empire.

Now, Joomla, birthed the following year by a group of like-minded people also in the USA, is a bit more user-friendly. It doesn’t demand that you understand the inner workings of the internet’s plumbing quite as much, which makes it a bit friendlier for beginners. It’s excellent for a wide variety of websites, especially if you fancy a built-in content management system that lets users take charge of their own bits. It might not be as tailored as ExpressionEngine, but it’s perfectly adequate for making a site that looks good without sending you into a spiraling existential crisis about CSS.
