ClickUp and Productboard are both excellent tools for managing work, organizing ideas and generally making sure things get done in a way that looks impressive in meetings. They both have colorful interfaces, endless integrations and enough features to make even the most hardened project manager feel a tiny bit overwhelmed. If you need roadmaps, tasks and a system that tells you what to do next without actually making you do it, either will do the job admirably.

ClickUp, however, is the Swiss Army knife of productivity—useful for absolutely everything, even if you’re not entirely sure how. It burst onto the scene in 2017 from the U.S., claiming it could replace all your other tools (which is, of course, a bold claim that conveniently ignores human nature). It has automation, goal tracking, document collaboration and enough customization options to keep a team of overthinkers busy for years. It’s for everyone and everything, which is wonderful, except for those moments when you just want to do one simple thing and suddenly find yourself configuring a dashboard for it.

Productboard, on the other hand, knows exactly what it is and doesn’t pretend otherwise. It appeared in 2014 from the Czech Republic with a singular mission: to make product managers feel like they actually understand what customers want. It’s built around feedback, priorities and strategy—great if you’re designing the next big thing, but less useful if you just want to keep your tasks in order. It doesn’t try to be everything, which is either a relief or a limitation, depending on how much you enjoy drowning in customization options.
