ChatGPT and Rasa are both, in their own ways, attempts to make machines understand humans, which is a bit like teaching a rock to do ballet—ambitious, but fraught with unexpected consequences. They both process language, respond to queries and can be integrated into applications, all while giving the impression that they actually know what they’re talking about. They’re also both customizable, which is another way of saying that they’ll do what you want, but only if you first spend an alarming amount of time figuring out how to make them do it.

ChatGPT, hailing from OpenAI in the USA and making its grand debut in 2020, is rather like an exceptionally well-read parrot that has spent too much time on the internet. It works straight out of the box, doesn’t require any data training and will happily respond to anything from astrophysics to why your cat seems to hate you (which, incidentally, is a deeply philosophical question). It’s hosted in the cloud, meaning you never quite know where it really is, but it’s always there when you need it—assuming the servers haven’t decided to take a nap.

Rasa, on the other hand, was unleashed upon the world in 2017 from Germany and is more like a build-your-own-chatbot kit for people who enjoy making life difficult for themselves. Unlike ChatGPT, it insists on being trained with custom data, which is a bit like adopting a puppy that refuses to sit unless you first write it a detailed instruction manual. It’s open-source, self-hosted and gives businesses complete control over their data—so long as they don’t mind occasionally feeling like a mad scientist trying to bring their creation to life.
