Imagine, if you will, two highly advanced and slightly eccentric beings from the vast cosmos of Business Intelligence: Birst and SAP Business Objects. Both are obsessed with reporting, dashboards and turning the otherwise mundane piles of data into something more digestible, like turning a bowl of spaghetti into a neat little plate of spaghetti. They both like to play nicely with other data sources—databases, clouds, you name it—and they both think it’s just fine if the average business user gets to play around with them without calling in the IT gods every five minutes.

Now, Birst, being a more recent arrival on the scene (since 2004, in fact), has a fondness for the cloud. It has a preference for those who might consider themselves a bit more nimble, a bit more modern, perhaps even a little bit hipster. It’s American, naturally and is particularly keen on helping mid-sized businesses leap into the future without tripping over their own feet. It deploys itself in a rather cheeky, multi-tenant cloud setup, making it feel rather futuristic, like a digital rollercoaster in the sky.

Then there’s SAP Business Objects. A long-standing veteran of the BI world, having been around since 1990 (which in the tech world is practically ancient), SAP is big, solid and tends to hang out with the big enterprise players. Originating in Germany, it prefers the company of traditional on-premises deployments, although it has started dabbling in the cloud, just to stay trendy. SAP is known for being deeply integrated with its own ERP systems—think of it like the dependable, slightly grumpy, but highly efficient librarian of the BI world.
