Avature and Workday are both cloud-based HR platforms, which in today's world means they exist in an ethereal plane of data centers, humming quietly while deciding the fates of job applicants everywhere. It’s highly customizable, meaning companies can tweak it endlessly to make job applicants feel special before rejecting them. It’s particularly good at handling large numbers of applicants, making it a favorite of industries that hire people by the truckload, like retail and hospitality. It also dabbles in internal mobility, which is HR-speak for shuffling employees around like a cosmic game of musical chairs.

Workday, also an American child of 2005, took a different path and decided that simply hiring people wasn’t enough—it wanted to run payroll, manage finances and generally control every aspect of a company’s existence. It’s particularly beloved by industries that need to do a lot of paperwork, like healthcare, finance and education, where people live in perpetual fear of compliance audits. Workday’s AI doesn’t just find you a job—it plans your entire career path, predicts when you’ll want a raise, and, if it had arms, would probably pat you on the head while gently nudging you toward retirement.
