Apptio and ServiceNow are both cloud-based software platforms designed to make IT management slightly less of a terrifying, unknowable abyss. They specialize in wrangling vast, unwieldy amounts of enterprise data and turning it into something resembling coherence, much like a very determined accountant armed with an intergalactic calculator. They integrate seamlessly with other business systems, providing analytics, automation and the illusion that IT spending is something that can be fully understood by humans. Naturally, they both serve enormous enterprises because only truly massive organizations have problems convoluted enough to require such expensive solutions.
Apptio, which sprang into existence in 2007 in the United States, is the sort of software that CIOs and IT finance teams cling to like a life raft in a sea of budget overruns. It obsesses over the financial side of IT, meticulously tracking costs, forecasting budgets and analyzing the total cost of ownership with the enthusiasm of a hyper-intelligent spreadsheet. It’s particularly fond of making sure cloud costs don’t spiral into an alternate dimension where money ceases to exist. IBM, sensing an opportunity to expand its empire of serious-sounding enterprise tools, scooped it up in 2023 and presumably now lets it have polite conversations with Watson over virtual cups of tea.
ServiceNow, born three years earlier in 2004 and also hailing from the United States, takes a slightly different approach by tackling workflows, automation and IT service management with the determination of a bureaucratic robot on a mission. While Apptio fixates on IT budgets, ServiceNow prefers to automate everything in sight, making it a favorite among IT service desks, HR departments and other teams who dream of a world where humans never have to fill out another form. It also offers a low-code/no-code platform, which means people with absolutely no coding experience can create applications that may or may not do exactly what they intend—an exciting prospect in any universe.
