AppDynamics and SolarWinds both attempt to make sense of the digital chaos that surrounds us by providing tools for monitoring everything from networks to databases and even the intricate web of application performance. Their main goal is to alert you before your server catches fire or at least before it bursts into flames and they both offer real-time data to help prevent an IT catastrophe from ruining your day. These two products also like to flaunt their ability to integrate with the cloud, which is something that makes them feel very much at home in today's modern, interconnected world. They can even give you lovely graphs and reports to show how everything's been going terribly well… until it all suddenly goes horribly wrong.
Now, AppDynamics, which emerged in 2008 from the fertile and slightly neurotic soil of Silicon Valley, has a particular fondness for monitoring applications. It focuses on the deep, inner workings of your software, tracking every little transaction and providing more insight than you probably wanted. It’s as if someone had invented a highly intelligent robot that watches over your entire application and whispers ominous warnings into your ear whenever something goes wrong—like an overly helpful assistant who refuses to leave you alone. It’s not as obsessed with monitoring individual transactions in applications as AppDynamics, but it’s incredibly good at keeping an eye on networks and infrastructure, especially for those who prefer not to get lost in the details. It’s got a reputation for being easier to use and less expensive, which makes it a favorite among small businesses that aren’t yet ready to hire a whole team of engineers just to keep their systems running. And while it may not be as flashy as AppDynamics, it’s definitely the one that shows up at the party with a sensible drink in hand, ready to keep things running smoothly without much fuss.
