Viewpoint
Cloud-based project management for your entire organisation – bring your extended team and supply chain together.

Aconex and Viewpoint are both cloud-based construction management tools, which is a fancy way of saying they exist to make sure buildings don’t collapse due to misplaced spreadsheets. They both handle documents, let people collaborate without resorting to email feuds and generally try to keep construction projects from spiraling into chaos. If a contractor sneezes in one part of the system, both ensure that everyone else at least gets a polite notification instead of being left wondering why there’s suddenly a 30-story hole where an office block was supposed to be.

Aconex, born in Australia in the year 2000, takes a rather egalitarian view of the world: everyone gets access to documents, messages and approvals in a lovely, neutral setting, like a giant digital conference room where people can politely disagree without throwing actual bricks. Oracle, in a fit of enthusiasm, acquired it in 2018, presumably because it enjoys owning things that organize other things. Aconex is particularly fond of project managers, contractors and owners who need a central place to exchange blueprints, excuses and occasional cries for help.

Meanwhile, Viewpoint, which has been around since 1976 in the United States, takes a more financially introspective approach. Acquired by Trimble in 2018, it decided that construction wasn’t just about building things—it was also about counting things, tracking things and making sure the people doing the building actually got paid. With its love for ERP, job costing and payroll, Viewpoint ensures that while workers are busy pouring concrete, someone else is meticulously tracking how much of it they’ve used, how much it costs and how much they can still afford before the whole project turns into a glorified sandcastle.
