Paychex
Paychex is a provider of human resource, payroll, and benefits outsourcing services for small- to medium-sized businesses.
ADP and Paychex, in many ways, are like two nearly identical robots built by slightly different mad scientists. Both handle payroll, HR and benefits, ensuring that people actually get paid rather than just receiving an existential nod from their employers. They both live in the cloud (not literally, though that would be quite something), offer mobile apps for employees to poke at and ensure that businesses don’t get into trouble with tax laws—because as we all know, tax trouble is the universe’s way of reminding you that life is both fleeting and expensive. If you own a business, big or small, they’ll gladly help you, provided you’re willing to wade through their many integrations, including the almighty QuickBooks.

ADP, being the elder statesman of the payroll world, has been around since 1949, which means it predates things like color television and basic human optimism. It specializes in serving massive enterprises with its sprawling, AI-infused, workforce-managing, tax-filing, analytics-spewing megastructure of a platform. It also offers Professional Employer Organization (PEO) services, which is a fancy way of saying, “Let us handle all the difficult HR stuff while you focus on running your space station, coffee shop or possibly both.” Naturally, this means ADP tends to be more expensive, because nothing that calls itself "enterprise-grade" ever comes cheap.

Paychex, on the other hand, arrived in 1971, presumably because someone looked at ADP and thought, “This could be smaller, friendlier and slightly less terrifying.” It mainly caters to small and mid-sized businesses—the sorts of places where everyone knows each other's coffee orders and the CEO also occasionally fixes the Wi-Fi. Paychex offers delightful things like hands-on customer service, 401(k) plans and financial wellness programs, because small businesses need retirement options too, even if they suspect they’ll never actually retire. It’s more affordable, less complex and ideal for people who think “AI-driven workforce analytics” sounds like something that might overthrow humanity rather than just process payroll.
