8x8 and GoToMeeting both exist in the perplexing realm of digital communication, where people pretend to be in meetings while secretly watching their own video feeds. They both allow humans to see, hear and occasionally understand each other across vast distances, offering video conferencing, screen sharing and integrations with popular work tools. Security features are included, presumably to prevent people from hacking in and adding amusing mustaches to their boss’s webcam feed.
8x8, a product of the late 20th century (which sounds far grander than just saying "1987"), started life in the U.S. and evolved into a full-blown corporate communication beast, complete with business phone systems, AI-powered analytics and the ability to make calls internationally, presumably to places where people have already stopped answering phones. It’s favored by large enterprises, who enjoy the fact that it does absolutely everything short of making coffee—though that’s probably just an upcoming feature update.
GoToMeeting, meanwhile, was launched in 2004 by Citrix, back when people still thought Flash animations were a good idea. Unlike 8x8, it doesn’t try to be a complete communication overlord but instead focuses on making meetings as painless as possible, which is about as successful as trying to make synchronized swimming a solo sport. It’s designed for smaller businesses, offers an ultra-light interface and even includes a commuter mode so people can pretend to be paying attention to meetings while actually navigating a roundabout for the fourth time in search of an exit.
